We’ve compiled a list of Memorial Day Weekend Events across the U.S. to help with your planning. You’ll find a variety of options — from tributes to Americans who died in military service to heritage events and reenactments. The list also includes ideas for old-fashioned fun including county fairs and fishing derbies.

Here’s a sampling of ideas to get you started:

May 1-Aug. 28 WASHINGTON, D.C., (Wed. only) Twilight Tattoo — Rich in military tradition, this hourlong performance signifying day’s end features the 3rd U.S. Infantry (The Old Guard) and the U.S. Army Band, Pershing’s Own. The U.S. Army Drill Team performs before the troops march onto the field. Location: Fort Lesley J. McNair, Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall. Contact: (202) 685-2888. Free.

May 2-June 9 WARWICK, Rhode Island, Gaspee Days Celebration — Highlights include a Colonial encampment and the Gaspee Days Parade and Colonial Muster, which features the Philadelphia Mummers. May 25 CHICAGO, Illinois, Memorial Day Parade — A wreath-laying ceremony is followed by one of the country’s largest Memorial Day parades. Location: The Loop area. Contact: (312) 744-3315. Free.

May 25-26 VINCENNES, Indiana, Spirit of Vincennes Rendezvous — This American Revolution period encampment includes battle reenactments, merchants, traders, craftsmen, children’s games, food and entertainment. Location: French Commons. Contact: (812) 882-7079. $.

May 25-26 WANTAGH, New York, New York Air Show at Jones Beach — See the American Airpower Museum Warbirds and other military and civilian performers. Location: Jones Beach State Park. (631) 669-1000. $.

May 25-27 LARNED, Kansas, Fort Larned Living History Weekend — Visit the soldiers in the barracks, officers’ wives on Officers Row and Plains Indians. See demonstrations of blacksmithing, firearms and cannon firing, cavalry and infantry. Location: Fort Larned National Historic Site. Contact: (620) 285-6911. Free.

May 27 GETTYSBURG, Pennsylvania, Memorial Day Parade and Ceremonies — This event, one of the oldest Memorial Day services in the United States, features Civil War reenactors and veteran groups parading to the Gettysburg National Cemetery. Location: Various locations. Contact: (717) 334-6274. Free.

May 27 HONOLULU, Hawaii Memorial Day Ceremonies — Members of the armed forces pay tribute to soldiers who gave their lives for their country. Location: National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. (808) 532-3720.

May 27 ROSWELL, Georgia, Memorial Day Ceremony — The laying of the wreath memorial ceremony, military honor guards, military flyovers and music make up this event. Location: Faces of War Memorial Site. Contact: (770) 640-3253.
